Thanks to Lee M and to Frank Fogarty, who concurred with my very hesitant ID,
that this is a Cooper's Hawk immature.
Lee and Frank pointed out the distinguishing features:
broad white tip of tail
very long tail compared to body
white spots on shoulder
(relatively) large head
thick tarsi
uneven tail banding pattern
dull yellow eye color
dark (not reddish or brownish) chest streaks
[and I thought they looked thin, not coarse, consistent with Sibley for COHA]
Thanks everyone, mystery solved to my satisfaction.

If anyone cares to help, please take a look at this photo of an immature
Accipiter we took at Loxahatchee NWR in Florida. Very ruffled, mussed
feathers bird. This is probably our best of several such photos.

Our only clue is Sibley's note about the chest streaks, "coarse brown" vs.
"thin, dark".
We would appreciate any help ID-ing this guy, and hope to learn what marks
are important or useful here. Thank you!!
