It took a while to get the photos (and this new blog) up and running,
but here's
a decent

our cicada-eating Red-headed Woodpecker from last weekend. Thanks to Donald

Our group of eight tallied 45 species. The highlighted today were two
red-headed woodpeckers. We had a very long, clear look at one, nestled in
the vee of a tree, devouring a cicada slowly. We had more fleeting
glimpses of the second bird. After a summer of finding ourselves lucky
to see one cuckoo, today we saw six in different areas of our walk. We
also had three red-eyed vireos feasting on fox grapes as well as a
pileated. The river was low and pretty quiet.
All are welcome to join this regular Sunday morning walk that meets at
8:00 am in the visitors center parking lot. -- Marshall Rawson, McLean VA
