Weather:
Heavy clouds throughout with light northeast winds strengthening and then
lessening as the day progressed. Cool temperatures.
Raptor Observations:
Well, we saw as many finch SPECIES as we saw total number of migrating
hawks. But who's complaining?
Non-raptor Observations:
An EIGHT FINCH day today! A single Common Redpoll heading north started the
day off right, and was quickly followed by two White-winged Crossbills and
a unseen but heard flock of Red Crossbills. A second flock of Red
Crossbills totaling 18 individuals passed south and briefly stopped before
continuing on their way. Throughout the morning, American Goldfinches were
moving south in small groups and hanging out by the feeders. A few House
Finches, Pine Siskins and Purple Finches were detected flying overhead,
leaving Evening Grosbeak as the only realistic finch for the day (but maybe
not for the year?). After a bit of a wait, two beautiful Evening Grosbeaks
flew right overhead! Eight finches from the platform!
Predictions:
Cloudy with a chance of finches.
