All,
I birded Highland county today. I got a very late start (noonish) but
somehow managed to get most of my target birds. Highlights were a Brewsters,
and a male Golden-winged Warbler along the Pendelton/Highland County line at
Maragaret O'bryans on Wimer lane (640). A single male Bobolink was spotted
across the road in the grassy fields. An adult Bald Eagle was spotted at
2:43 PM on Hardscrabble road East of the intersection with Heavner lane.
Vesper Sparrow, 2 Barred Owls and several Warblers were found along 642
between Blue Grass and Locust Springs. I did hear a Chickadee but I did not
see the bird. I thought the vocals sounded like a Carolina which isn't the
species I have come to expect in Highland Co. I didn't see or hear a single
Nuthatch or Titmouse in 9 hours of birding.......
Also of note were several West Virginia Whites on 642 East of the Beaver
Ponds and the abandoned white house with the boat inside. Why the boat is
inside the house and how it got there is something of a mystery..... anyway
my butterfly id skills are not the sharpest but I could not find any other
all white butterfly in this area and I also got excellent looks at the
brownish veins on the underwings. So I am reasonably confident of the id.
The day ended with great looks at a lone beaver swiming up to his lodge on
rt 250 West of Monterey.
