Subject: Loggerhead Shrike - Double Toll Gate, Clarke Co.
One of my birding neighbors reported that he saw a Shrike perched along the
road when he was out this morning but could not relocate it. When my wife sent
me out to the grocery store I spent a few minutes in the area and managed to
refind the bird. Double Toll Gate is the intersection of Rt. 522 and 340 (at
Dinosaur Land, for those of you familiar with the area). When heading north on
522/340, I turned right onto 340 when it split, and the bird was almost
immediately on the right hand side (south) in a pasture, but hanging out in a
couple of scrubby trees overhanging a teeny pond. It made several flights to
the ground and the fence. I managed a couple of pictures attached to the ebird
list at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S26515811 , but light was ;
not favorable.
There is some room to pull over, but be careful when pulling out again.
