After birding at Leesylvania SP with Joanna and Scott, I walked around Mason
Neck NWR.
The highlight of the day (and perhaps my life to date) was a juvenile
Nothern Harrier hunting over the marsh off the Great Marsh Trail boardwalk.
The NH took 5 or 6 passes over the marsh in a 10 minute period. I had
fantastic views of his backside and underside as he banked in turns. He
flew silently just a few feet above the grasses. On the last pass he flew
about 30 feet in front of me, up the creek and over the ridge.
From the WoodMarsh Trail I saw another juvenile bald eagle circling over the
ridge.
The lowlife was a tremendous flock(s) of grackle. I walked through the
birds 3 times and heard them in the distance once or twice more. I don't
know if it was one huge flock or several large ones ..... everyone on the
trail commented on them !
While on the Woodmarsh trail a Pilated Woodpecker called twice and drummed.
As I got closer I caught a very very brief glimpse as he wove through the
trees to a new grackle-free location.
