This time of year bluebirds and some other cavity nesters are selecting
nest sites for next spring. What you saw was typical aggression toward a nest
predator. Yesterday I heard bluebirds singing vigorously.

Subject: [Va-bird] Red Headed Woodpecker Vs. Bluebirds
I tracked down the RHWPs at Huntley Meadows today, and was surprised to see
one being mobbed by 6+ northern bluebirds. The pecker appeared to be
investigating a knothole or crevasse in a tree, possibly looking to store
acorns, behavior I observed from a number of the red-headeds. Anyone have any
idea what might have provoked such agression?
