Josh: I was able to locate three redpolls today at Blandy. I believe that they
are commons. Attached are a few photos. Two of the birds were rather dark --
the third was much lighter -- all three were heavily streaked. Their red
foreheads were pretty easy to pick out. They were by the parking lot near the
weather tower. I saw them first thing this morning -- just as the sun was
coming up. Thanks for reporting them yesterday. Bill

Subject: [Va-bird] Redpoll at Blandy (but no crossbills)
I birded at Blandy from 3 to 5pm today. Thanks to a couple of birders I
came across who had found the bird, I saw a Redpoll today at Blandy in one
of the conifers east of the pavilion at Rattlesnake Spring. My view was a
brief look with only the head visible through a scope but it appeared to be
a Common.
Other birds of interest: there were 6-8 Pine Siskins at the feeders near
the main parking lot and Red-breasted Nuthatches in good numbers all over
the property.
No luck on the crossbills for me. I checked both south of the quarters and,
as mentioned, east of the pavilion.
