I agree about the movement of Rusties. This afternoon, I saw 80 Rusties along
Douglas Road (east side of Dismal Swamp NWR), just west of the Douglas Rd/Route
17 intersection. They were singing up a storm! I even tried showing them to
Chesapeake City police officer, who had stopped to ask me what I was doing, but
they flew before I had a chance to pass him my binoculars. He thought that he
flushed them and apologized. I'm not so sure. They are tricky birds. Earlier, I
had tried to get a closer look at a female Rusty. However, no matter how quiet
I was, she apparently knew I was there. She flew up, perched, and called. Neat
birds. There definitely seem to be more around since the end of the blackbird
blitz! Where were those guys then? South of here, I assume.

Rusties must be on the move! My husband and I took an early afternoon hike
today in Chesterfield County's Robious Landing Park, and my sharper eyed
husband spotted five of them. I've always thought this had perfect habitat
for them but, although I've never had any luck when I've surveyed there for
the Rusty Blackbird Blitz, it's nice to be proved right!
