Hi everyone,
Another year of birding in Virginia has just wrapped up, with many
wonderful sightings shared by many birders across the state. To mark the
new year, Rob Bielawski, James Fox, Nick Newberry, and myself would like to
take the time to ask for submissions for a Virginia Annual Birding Report.
Several other states publish, or have in the past, annual birding reports
that collect various list totals, birding summaries, and other data and
present it for the enjoyment of the birding community. The four of us have
enjoyed participating and/or reading reports from other states, and would
really like to get something similar started here in Virginia. We hope many
of you will also be interested!
As the basis for this report, we have developed a number of categories for
which we invite people to submit their list totals. Attached to this
message is a report form that outlines all the categories we would like to
collect submissions for. Please feel free to submit your totals for as few
or as many categories as you would like! We are also hoping to chronicle
some of Virginia’s birding history, so there is also space at the end of
the form for submitting historic list totals in any of the categories.
To make things easier for you, Rob Bielawski has developed a series of
Excel workbooks which will calculate many of the values we are requesting.
Rob’s spreadsheet is able to calculate these values using your eBird data,
so all you have to do is download your data and forward it to him so that
he can run the numbers. Instructions on how to do this can be found at the
beginning of the report form.
In addition to the annual report form, we have also included a Big Day
Report form, as we would like to track current and historic numbers for
statewide and/or county Big Days in Virginia. If you have ever done a Big
Day, please feel free to submit your total using this form.
If anyone has any further questions about the annual report or how to
submit, please let us know! We hope that many people will send in their
data for what will hopefully be an interesting and exciting snapshot of the
Virginia birding community!
