Thanks Arun for the email.
I emailed Susan and heard from her this morning. She no longer subscribes to
VA-bird. She told me that there are photos linked to her ebird report now, but
here is some of the information she sent me. One needs a boat to get to
Metompkin (stating the obvious I guess).
"General plumage: breeding (alternate), nonbreeding (basic), juvenal, etc.
nonbreeding
Specific location: include county or city, and nearest street name/route number
and GPS coordinates if possible; also include description of habitat
Mid-Metompkin Island, Accomack Co. 37.743, -75.556 (on peat banks at the
shore of a narrow barrier island)
Date and time of observation
9/23/13, 3:49 pm (about midway to low tide)
Length of observation
3 minutes
Distance(s) at which bird(s) observed & lighting/viewing conditions
~100 feet, sun is behind me
I can't add much to what's in the photo. Bird was slightly larger than the
sanderlings and dunlins in the area. It had black legs, some white in wing, a
white rump, an eyebrow, a longish slightly decurved bill, and was generally
pale gray."
