Andy Martin and I found the flock yesterday afternoon. They were in perhaps
the same field of corn stubble close to Hopewell Road across from a farm
house and bordered by orchards. We got great looks and sat for a long time
enjoying them. If we had not been looking for them, we never would have
seen them! We also came across 6 Common Mergansers on the Shenandoah river
near the bridge at Swift Shoals Road and Rt. 50. They were swimming amidst
big chunks of floating ice and snow. We saw several Northern Harriers in
our travels but no Short-eared Owls.
