Nine birders participated in this morning's Northern Virginia Bird Club walk
at the Huntley Meadows Hike Bike Trail, led by Tom Nardone and Dixie Sommers.
After an enjoyable but not particularly birdy walk, we were entertained by a
feeding flock of titmice, chickadees and warblers on our way out, along the
drive from the parking lot to the maintenance area. We were tipped off by
noisy titmice, and in watching the frenzy we saw 3 American Redstarts, 3
Northern Parula, and one each Black-and-White, Magnolia and Black-throated
Green Warblers. Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were also in the group.
Otherwise, we had the usual complement of species, as well as 2 Northern
Parula and 2 Black-and-White Warblers in a large tree at the Woodcock Meadow.
As we were about to leave the parking lot at the end of the walk, a couple of
birders spotted a Red-tailed Hawk, a nice ending for the morning.

Warm and hazy. Nice west wind in the morning that died after lunch. The
only clouds were persistent jet trails.
Raptor Observations:
The UB was a possible Swainson's Hawk. Dark buteo with long slim pointed
wings. It did a few swoops, a steep dive and a graceful barrel roll down
behind the crest of the west ridge and never reappeared. As Pete Dunne
wrote in Hawks in Flight, if your Harrier turns into a buteo, it's a
Swainson's. About a one minute look. No pictures. 3:40 pm EDT.

Weather:
No fog this morning! Moderate WNW Winds throughout the day then strong SW
Winds at the end of the count. 18.2-25.2C. Mostly sunny with some clouds
until 2pm then mostly cloudy with lots of low, heavy clouds and some
distant rain in the western sky. Hazy in the distance.
Raptor Observations:
A fun day with lots of different raptor species. A steady flow of
Broad-wings and no "midday lull" with over 100 for 5 hours in a row. Most
Broad-wings flew down the west side of the gap today with a good number
coming overhead. Unfortunately the BW flight was immediately shut down
when the looming dark clouds moved in. Hourly BW Count: 0 (6:45-8), 125
(8-9), 204 (9-10), 137 (10-11), 116 (11-12), 130 (12-1), 71 (1-2), 26
(2-3), 0 (3-5).
Adult BE 11:00, 11:10. 4th-YR BE 1:11, 3rd-YR BE 1:37. Two immature NH
(9:52 and 10:52). A great Merlin day with seven (12:39, 1:47, 1:47, 2:38,
3:45, 3:45, 3:59).
First Raptor: 7:23 SS, Last Raptor: 4:46 CH.
Non-raptor Observations:
A very nice early morning songbird flight including 6 Red-headed
Woodpeckers, 1 YB Sapsucker, 13 Tree Swallows, 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet, 32
Cedar Waxwings, many warblers (those identified included Cape May, BT Blue,
BT Green), 1 Lincolns Sparrow, 11 Scarlet Tanagers, 3 RB Grosbeaks. Other
birds counted today: 1 Common Nighthawk (11:30am), 506 Chimney Swifts, 8 RT
Hummingbirds. 45 Monarch Butterflies.
Predictions:
Similar weather to today.

Hello birders,
My favorite part of Dixie Sommers' report today for the NVBC walk at Huntley,
was the mixed flock.
For myself, today was my first ever visit to eBird hot spot Silver Lake
Regional Park (Prince William county). A nice assortment of birds, not a
huge load of warblers but good overall variety. The highlight for me was the
one mixed flock of the day.
Different from the usual, this flock had no chickadee / titmouse members, and
no woodpeckers. In fact it only had 3 individual birds, but they were the
"best birds" of the day in my opinion. The list is below, see if you agree.
It was very calm (no wind) and quiet - I'm pretty sure these were the only 3
birds in this "flock", if you can call it that: Blue-headed Vireo, and
Black-throated Green and Tennessee Warbler, all actively foraging near each
other.
