Present all winter, the two lesser black-backed gulls that follow the
ferry between Jamestown and Scotland put on a good show Thursday, providing
lots of nice photographs for the ornithology class from William & Mary.
One bird is transitioning from 1st to 2nd year plumage and is currently
missing a tail feather; the other is older, seemingly about to obtain full
adult plumage for the first time. Bonaparte's, Herring, Ring-billed and
Great Black-backed were also present behind the ferry of course. Sunken
Meadows, near Surry, had a dozen tundra swans and 8 mutes swans, 8 Wood
Ducks, 15 Gadwall, and 8 Hooded Mergansers. Two Wilson's Snipe flushed
from the west end of the pond. 4000 Canada Geese were seen across the
James River from the east end.

Hi,
I am looking for recommendations for birding in Virginia this coming week.
I
am very familiar with birding sites in central Virginia, and have a copy of
the Virginia DGIF Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail guide for state-wide
birding locations. However, some great birding sites like the Dutch Gap
conservation area south of Richmond are not shown in the DGIF guide.
Any other winter Virginia birding jewels like Dutch Gap that are not on the
VA B&WT that you can recommend to me off-list?

Nine birders came out for the monthly walk at the Blue Ridge Center
sponsered by the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and held the fourth Saturday
of every month except for December. This month the walk was co-sponsored
by the Northern Virginia Bird Club. The weather was gray and somewhat
chilly, but we were not bothered by any rain.
We started out in the fields near the gardens and found a nice sparrow
showing with White-crowned, Field, White-throated, and Song Sparrows
putting in an appearance. In this same area we found a House Wren. This
bird was seen by several of us and was also found again not too far away at
the end of our walk. We then walked the Farmstead Loop through the woods
and walked around some fields. Highlights included six species of
Woodpeckers, two more species of Wrens, Wild Turkeys, Brown Creepers, a
Hermit Thrush, and Golden-crowned Kinglets. 36 species total.

I am seriously considering dragging my ridiculously jet-lagged self up
into VA to have a go at these two and it seems that Fauquire Co... Harrison
Rd for the owls and a Bowmans Pond for the geese... would be the ticket.
Although I have heard the owls could be at E. Green Springs Rd. off Rt. 15
and thus closer to me.
If anyone would like to give me a heads up, hints or suggestions (the more
detailed the better- where to park, where to look, when... I am assuming
dusk for the owls... is anyone seeing them in the daytime?). Remember I
have been in another hemisphere and am upside down at present.

Stopped by Pohick Bay late this afternoon for about an hour.
Lots of waterfowl, but it was all far to the right of the boat ramp, and
much further out than usual.
All of the usual suspects, including all three mergansers, and both
Pied-billed and Horned Grebes.
Of most interest to me was that there were more Red-breasted Mergansers
than I had seen there before.
I counted at least 15 Red-breasted Mergansers, including a group of seven
in one scope field at one time.

This evening about 6:15 we heard Chorus frogs singing from the wet fields
as we drove down the road near Manassas Battlefield Park so we drove to the
first park parking lot off of Featherbed Lane where there is a small pond
to listen for them. As soon as we drove into the lot we heard Woodcocks
peenting. There were at least 6 calling and performing aerial displays and
off in the distance we could hear more. Several flew within 15' of us as we
stood in the lot.

Went off as planned this evening. Skies remained gray, but there was
no rain and the temperature was quite comfortable. Fourteen people
turned out for the adventure and I do believe everyone left happy.
First "peent" was heard at 6:01pm and the flights started shortly
thereafter. We had 5 birds in all and a few were kind enough to land
in the newly mowed path through the meadow. We were able to shine the
light on three birds and everyone was able to get good looks thru
their bins as the birds peented and pivoted before taking flight again
The show ended right around 6:30. One member of the crew walking ahead
of us on the way out heard a distant Barred Owl, which chose not to
repeat itself for the rest of the gang... PJ Dunn is leading another
walk next Saturday, March 2nd. Starts at 5:30p.

This morning about 10am I was looking out the kitchen window when I
spotted five big white birds swimming up the lake in front of my house.
At first
I thought they snow geese but after further inspection with binoculars
they
were identified as being Tundra Swans. They stayed in the area where I
could see them for over an hour. This afternoon there were hundreds of Ring
Necked Ducks on the lake in front of the house. I live on the Charles City
side of the lake about six miles above the dam at 15220 Cypress Bank Rd

Heard my first Woodcocks of the season this evening just outside of
Kilmarnock in Lancaster County. Being from Pennsylvania, I thought of this
as an unusually early date to hear them, but looking at eBird, it seems
they've been calling around eastern VA for a couple weeks now. I guess the
ones here in Kilmarnock missed the memo...
