Just spotted (9:30 am) three Red-necked Grebes in Lake Shawnee, Powhatan
County. They were in a loose group of two Buffleheads, five Ring-necks, 14
Ruddies and four Canada Geese. All are in the 2nd lake very visible from
the 2nd dam road (Kohler Drive). There's beach parking along side the road
and a small fishing pier you may access for a closer look. Parking along
side the road is permitted as well. Also, one FOS Tree Swallow sitting on
the powerline.

It was a fine, warm day for conducting a complete shorebird survey on the
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Water levels were good in the
impoundments with more waterfowl taking advantage then shorebirds. Still, we
counted 1,321 individual shorebirds of 10 species with dunlin leading the count
with 964 individuals. Not bad for winter and perhaps a hint of the spring
migration to come. Most of the shorebirds were on Tom's Cove on a falling or
low tide. A high count of 164 horned grebes on Tom's Cove is a high number for
the area. The "best" bird of the day for us was the?4 red-necked grebes; 3 on
Swans Cove across from the NPS Visitor Center and one Chincoteague Bay of the
Service Road.
Below are the results of our weekly shorebird/gull survey conducted at
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on?Monday Mar 10, 2014. All water areas
(impoundments and beach areas) were covered in a?6 hour survey. All individuals
are counted for the target species; other birds seen or heard on the survey are
followed by a dash.
Our next survey will be March. 25th.

At least three Red-necked Grebes (originally reported by Jon Little on
3/6/14) continue on Lake Frederick in Frederick County. Other waterfowl on
the lake included Canada Geese, Wood Ducks, Mallards, Ring-necked Ducks,
Scaup sp. (a little too far for me to be confident on Gr/Lesser),
Bufflehead, and Hooded Mergansers.

For those who have expressed interest in seeing photos of the tanager:
http://flic.kr/s/aHsjUnHvLb
These photos have been shot over the past week. They are mostly from a
point and shoot camera through a glass window. Some are cropped to enlarge
the image of the bird.
Monday Tom Jones joined me for tanager watch at my house and we listed the
following birds while we waited for the tanager to drop in. Tom brought
his wonderful scope so that I was able to see and identify some waterfowl
that were new to me since some stay out in the middle of the lake, out of
range of my weaker scope.
At 8:30 there were *46 Tundra Swans* that eventually moved down the lake
due to the territorial mute swans. I got to identify my first* 4* *American
Wigeons and 2 Gadwalls*. I was happy to see *3 Red-necked Grebes* returned
for the morning. A group of around *17 Lesser Scaups* were resting,
and the *Bald
Eagle* flew in for awhile too.
Enjoy!
Suzanne

Hi all:
?
Unfortunately for this osprey, the nest platform is tilting too much.? Bad news.
Maybe next year someone could fix it up, unless someone gets on the ball soon.
I have no carpentry skills.
?
No luck with the screech owls.? Same day.

Stuart and anyone else --
Osprey Platform ---
I don't own a boat but I can offer my time to see if we can move the
platform, fix the pole or find alternative solution.
It breaks my heart to see the platform leaning in such a way it would most
likely not allow him and his mate to raise another successful nest of young
Osprey.
If anyone has ideas, I am reachable offline.
