Hi VA-Birders,
We explored the Yorktown area on our bicycles this morning and found 44 species.
In the parking lot at the Visitor Center, we had great looks at an adult male
SUMMER TANAGER, then saw the female and juvenile fly by. Along the waterfront
we saw an OSPREY on a bare limb enjoying his first catch of the day, then
watched a ROYAL TERN dive into the York River in search of breakfast. There was
an added bonus of 4 dolphins swimming north together just below the Coleman
Bridge.
We then biked the 7-mile Battlefield Tour, which takes you on a loop to
Surrender Field and back up Surrender Road to the Visitor Center. In a
spicebush along the way, we saw a VEERY and WOOD THRUSH at the same time.
Always a treat to get two thrushes in the binoculars. The berries are ripe and
were attracting several birds.
Another stop produced a female BALTIMORE ORIOLE, immature or female AMERICAN
REDSTART, a GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER and EASTERN KINGBIRD. We had good luck
today with flycatchers as we also saw EASTERN PHOEBE and EASTERN-WOOD PEEWEE.
Most abundant bird today was AMERICAN ROBIN - we saw lots of juveniles along
with the adults.
