I walked my bluebird trail yesterday for the last time this season. All the
boxes are now empty. I came upon a large flock of birds feeding on cherries.
There is a row of mature cherry trees along a fence line, loaded with ripe
berries. There were many Bluebirds, Robins, Flickers, Baltimore Orioles,
Eastern Kingbirds, Phoebes, Great-crested Flycatchers, and House Finch all
actively feeding. There were also Downy, Hairy & Pileated woodpeckers. It was a
lot of fun to watch so many birds all congregated and interacting. Later along
the trail I ran into another flock of migrants that included Chestnut-sided,
Black & White and Common Yellow-throat. At the end of the park, looking over
into Westwood CC, I saw a large flock of Cow Birds feeding in the grass. Many
of the birds were molting from brown to black.
