Top bird this week is BAR-TAILED GODWIT in VA.
Other birds of interest include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, WHITE IBIS,
WHITE-FACED IBIS, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, SORA, shorebirds, YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, COMMON RAVEN, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH,
warblers, LARK SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
The BAR-TAILED GODWIT continued at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co VA,
with the latest reported sighting on Sep 22.
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was seen on Shearness Pool, Bombay Hook NWR,
Kent Co, DE, during the week and a WHITE IBIS was also there. Two
immature WHITE IBIS were spotted on the Life of the Forest Trail in
Assateague Nat'l Seashore, Worcester Co, MD on Sep 19. A WHITE-FACED
IBIS was seen at Bombay Hook NWR on Sep 21.
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS migrated through in huge numbers. Cromwell Valley
Park, Baltimore Co, MD reported 8,593 on Sep 18. Rockfish Gap near
Waynesboro, VA had 7,045 on Sep 19; Snicker's Gap near Leesburg, VA
recorded 3,842 on Sep 20. Numbers declined significantly in MD and
northern VA by the end of the week.
A SORA was heard on Sep 19 and one was seen on Sep 22 at Kenilworth
Aquatic Gardens, Washington, DC.
There were two HUDSONIAN GODWITS in Shearness Pool and two MARBLED
GODWITS in Bear Swamp at Bombay Hook NWR on Sep 20. There were several
sightings of BAIRD'S SANDPIPER this week. One was in a farm field pool
near the intersection of Rt. 213 and Whitehall Rd, Cecil Co, MD on Sep
20, 21, and 22. Another was seen at the Brown Station Rd Recycle pond,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Sep 20. A third was found at the Trotters
Ridge ponds, Prince William Co, VA on Sep 21. Up to 4 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS were in the north cell of the Swan Creek wetlands at Cox
Creek DMCF, Anne Arundel Co, MD on Sep 17 and 18.
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was found at Wheaton Reg Park, Montgomery
Co, MD on Sep 19 and 22; Black Marsh at North Point SP, Baltimore, MD
on Sep 18; Hughes Hollow-McKee Beshers WMA, Montgomery Co, MD on Sep
22; Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore, MD on Sep 23 and Black Walnut
Point, Talbot Co, MD on Sep 20.
PHILADELPHIA VIREO was found in several areas. Single birds were seen
throughout the week in Cromwell Valley Park. Other sightings included
the maintenance yard in Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC; the Wilson
Trail in Little Bennett Reg Park, Montgomery Co, MD; Meadowbrook Park,
Howard Co, MD; Tuckahoe SP, Caroline Co, MD; Bayside at Assateague
Island, MD; Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD; and Cape Henlopen SP,
Sussex Co, DE.
Two COMMON RAVENS were on the River Trail at Kenilworth Aquatic
Gardens on Sep 19.
There were sightings of GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH at Cape Henlopen SP on Sep
23; Ken-Gar Recreational Area and Meadowside, Montgomery Co, MD on Sep
18; and Black Marsh, Baltimore Co, MD on Sep 18.
Warbler migration continued in good numbers. One happy birder recorded
a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER in his yard in Laurel, MD. A GOLDEN-WINGED was
found in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Howard Co, MD on Sep
21. There were numerous reports of CONNECTICUT WARBLER including Rock
Creek Park, Washington, DC; Governor Bridge Natural Area, Prince
Georges Co, MD; Nutters Neck WMA, Wicomico Co, MD; Patuxent Research
Refuge, Prince Georges Co, MD; Susquehanna SP, Harford Co, MD; and Sky
Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA. MOURNING WARBLER was found at Lake
Artemesia, Prince Georges Co, MD and the intersection of Park Head Rd
and Galilee Rd, Washington Co, MD.
A LARK SPARROW was heard at the Cape Henlopen SP Hawk Watch on Sep 20.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen at Saddlebrook Community Park, Prince
Georges Co, MD on Sep 23.
