Hurricane Irene brought many unusual birds to the area including
BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL and WHITE-TAILED TROPICBIRD to DE, jaegers to
DE, MD, and VA, RED-NECKED PHALAROPES* to MD and VA, terns, and
BROWN-CHESTED MARTIN* to VA. The other top bird this week was
SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* in VA.
Birds of interest include TRICOLORED HERON, MISSISSIPPI KITE,
shorebirds, SANDWICH and BLACK TERN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, flycatchers,
and warblers.
On a visit to Fowler Beach, Sussex Co, DE on Aug 28 birders found
BAND-RUMPED STORM-PETREL, WHITE-TAILED TROPICBIRD, POMARINE JAEGER,
BRIDLED and SOOTY TERNS.
The two SWALLOW-TAILED KITES* which were first observed last week over
a farm field in Campbell Co, VA, about two miles from Gladys, off Long
Island Road, Rte. 761, continued to be seen this past week though only
the one with the radio transmitter was seen from the 25th through the
28th. Some days the SWALLOW-TAILED KITE(S) were joined by as many as
three MISSISSIPPI KITES.
Two RED-NECKED PHALAROPES* were seen in Pohick Bay, Fairfax Co, VA on
Aug 27. A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE* was found Aug 28 at Dyke Marsh,
Fairfax Co, VA.
Among the many unusual shorebirds at the flats in Harford Co, MD on
Aug 28 were two RED-NECKED PHALAROPES*.
A LONG-TAILED JAEGER* and an adult tropical tern were seen Aug 28 at
North Beach, Calvert Co, MD. A probable jaeger sp. flew over Burke
Lake, Fairfax Co, VA, Aug 28.
An ARCTIC TERN* joined a number of other tern species at the Cape
Charles beach, Northampton Co, VA on Aug 27. A possible ARCTIC TERN*
was seen Aug 28 at Hains Point, SW DC. And another ARCTIC TERN*, a
beautifully plumaged adult, was seen Aug 28 at the Choptank River
mouth, Ferry Neck, 0.25 miles SE of Lucy Point, Talbot Co, MD.
Two BRIDLED TERNS*, a juvenile and a subadult, were among several
terns seen Aug 27 at Oyster, Northampton Co, VA.
A juvenile BRIDLED TERN* and an adult SOOTY TERN* were seen Aug 28
from the Sunset Beach restaurant, Northampton Co, VA. A BRIDLED TERN*
was also seen from Ocean City, MD on Aug 28.
Two SOOTY TERNS* were seen from the Sandy River Reservoir boat ramp,
Prince Edward Co, VA on Aug 27. Two SOOTY TERNS* were also seen Aug 27
at Lake Anna Louisa Co, VA. Two adult SOOTY TERNS* flew past
Hemmingway's Restaurant, Kent Island, Queen Anne's Co, MD on Aug 28. A
juvenile SOOTY TERN* was seen Aug 28 at Black Walnut Pt, Talbot Co,
MD.
Four SOOTY TERNS*, two adults and two juveniles, as well as two
POMARINE JAEGERS were seen Aug 28 from the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge/Tunnel islands, Northampton Co, VA.
A BROWN-CHESTED MARTIN* was among the many swallows passing through
Wise Point and Fisherman Island off Northampton Co, VA, on Aug 28.
The TRICOLORED HERON at Piney Run Reservoir, Carroll Co, MD continues
with a report from August 27.
Five MISSISSIPPI KITES, three at 6325 Wilmington Dr and two at 9017
Orange Hunt Ln, were found Aug 23 in and near the Kings Park area of
Fairfax Co, VA.
Among the many unusual shorebirds at the flats in Harford Co, MD on
Aug 28 were BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, RED KNOTS,
SANDERLINGS, and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS. The weekly survey of
shorebirds at the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on Aug 25 found 21
species of shorebirds including 19 RED KNOTS, a WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, and two WILSON'S PHALROPES. A WILSON'S PLOVER and a MARBLED
GODWIT were at Staunton View Public Use Area, Mecklenburg Co, VA, Aug
26; the MARBLED GODWIT was also seen on Aug 28 as well as a
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on Aug 28 and 29. An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER
and a WILLET were seen Aug 28 from Fort Armistead Park, Baltimore, MD.
Two AMERICAN AVOCETS flew by Hains Point, SW DC on Aug 27. Two
AMERICAN AVOCETS were found Aug 29 at Allen's Fresh marsh, Charles Co,
MD. A WHITE-RUMPED and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER were found Aug 28 next to a
large pond on the north side of Humbert Rd, Rte 616, near New Hope,
Augusta Co, VA. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was among many shorebirds seen Aug
28 at Horner's Mill Rd, Leedstown, Westmoreland Co, VA. Two BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS were seen at Hurlock WWTP, Dorchester Co, MD on Aug 23.This
past week three UPLAND SANDPIPERS were found along Cartanza Road near
Little Creek, east of Dover, DE.
SANDWICH TERNS were seen Aug 25 at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA
and reported from a number of locations during and after Hurricane
Irene passed through. ROYAL TERNS popped up at a number of inland
locations during and after the hurricane and BLACK TERNS were being
reported from a number of locations even before Hurricane Irene came
through and there were even more being reported afterwards. Thirty-six
were counted at Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD, on Aug 25; 19 the
same day at Staunton River State Park, Scottsburg, VA, and 36 at
Staunton View on Aug 27. On Aug 26 there were 11 BLACK TERNS at
Perryville Community Park, Cecil Co, MD and there were 11 Aug 27 at
North Beach, Calvert Co, MD.
While COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in several locations, including in
the lights above the towers at Tyson's Corner, Fairfax Co, VA, before
Hurricane Irene came through, even more were being reported afterwards
and in locations and numbers where they are not usually seen.
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS continued to pop up in a lot of locations this
past week including one in the Fenwick Mines area of Craig Co, VA on
Aug 23, and another on Aug 23, 25, and 26 at Brookside Gardens,
Montgomery Co, MD. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, a YELLOW-BELLIED, and a
LEAST FLYCATCHER were seen Aug 24 at Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery
Co, MD while a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was there on Aug 26. And a
probable ALDER FLYCATCHER was there on Aug 29. An OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER was seen Aug 24 at Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co, MD. An
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER were seen Aug
25 and 26 at Schooley Mill Park, Howard Co, MD. A YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER was reported Aug 27 at Little Bennett Regional Park,
Montgomery Co, MD.
The number of migrating warblers increased this past week with a
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER seen Aug 26 at Rock Creek Park, DC, one of the
more productive locations. A MOURNING WARBLER was seen Aug 23 at the
Swan Creek/Cox Creek Dredge Area, Anne Arundel Co, MD and a MOURNING
WARBLER was also reported from Terrapin Park, Stevensville, Queen
Anne's Co, MD, on Aug 24 and Aug 25.
