Top birds this week are WHITE-FACED IBIS* in VA and BLACK RAIL* in WV.
Other birds of interest include COMMON MERGANSER, HORNED GREBE,
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN*, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, PEREGRINE FALCON, PIPING
PLOVER, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, ALDER FLYCATCHER, CLIFF SWALLOW,
GOLDEN-WINGED, BREWSTER'S, and CERULEAN WARBLERS, HENSLOW'S SPARROW,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and DICKCISSEL.
A WHITE-FACED IBIS* was seen from the wildlife drive at Chincoteague
NWR, Accomack Co, VA on June 11.
A BLACK RAIL* was found May 29 a little north of Capon Bridge,
Hampshire Co, WV. To get there take Rte 50 from Winchester, VA to
Capon Bridge, and than take Co Rd 15 north out of town for 1.31 miles
to a gravel pull off right before a turn into a development. The Black
Rail continued to be heard through June 9 in the bullrush wet meadow
almost directly across from the entrance to the road. A possible
second BLACK RAIL was heard there on June 8.
A female COMMON MERGANSER with several ducklings was seen in the
Potomac River near Violette's Lock on the C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD
on June 6.
A HORNED GREBE in breeding plumage was spotted on the Potomac River at
Violette's Lock on June 6, 8, and 9.
Four AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS* were still at Fowler Beach, Sussex Co,
DE on June 10.
An immature BROAD-WINGED HAWK visited a backyard in Bowie, Prince
Georges Co, MD on June 8. A birder got a startling view of two
PEREGRINE FALCONS attacking a third over the office complex at
Bailey's Crossroads, Fairfax Co, VA on June 11.
The PIPING PLOVERS at Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE have fledged 7
chicks so far. A female RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was found at the Swan
Creek facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on June 6. It apparently departed
soon thereafter.
The ALDER FLYCATCHER at the Howard County Conservancy, Woodstock, MD
was seen again on June 9 and 10. It is in a field along the stream
beside Rte 99. An ALDER FLYCATCHER was seen near the intersection of
St Clair and Lucketts Rds in northern Loudoun Co, VA on June 10.
At least 5 CLIFF SWALLOWS were flying around the footbridge to
Theodore Roosevelt Island, Washington, DC on June 10. CLIFF SWALLOWS
were also found at the bridge in Leipsic, Kent Co, DE.
The GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS and HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were observed again
along Old Legislative Rd in Allegany Co, MD. (From I-68, take exit 33
south about one-half mile past Klondike RD.) GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS
were also seen farther south on Old Legislative Rd near Squirrel Neck
Run Rd. These species are in serious trouble in MD and elsewhere and
birders are urged to refrain from disturbance such as the use of
recorded songs and calls. A BREWSTER'S WARBLER (hybrid GOLDEN-WINGED
and BLUE-WINGED) was seen in the area on June 7 and 9. A group of
biking birders found 16 CERULEAN WARBLERS on the C&O Canal between
mile markers 141 and 153 in Washington Co, MD.
A very late WHITE-THROATED SPARROW visited feeders at Waterford,
Loudoun Co, VA on June 6.
There are now 21 DICKCISSELS on the Chino Farms, Queen Anne's Co, MD.
