Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, June 21, at 9
AM.
Top bird this week is FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER* in VA.
Other birds of interest include ducks, loons, grebes, LEAST BITTERN,
NORTHERN HARRIER, BLACK-NECKED STILT, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, WILSON'S
PHALAROPE, ICELAND GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE*, SHORT-EARED OWL,
nightjars, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, sparrows, and DICKCISSEL.
A FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER* was found and seen several times throughout
the day on June 18 in Chesapeake, VA at the intersection of Peach and
Hertz Rd. It was not relocated after that day.
A visit to Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on June 15 found several birds
uncommon for this area at this time of year including a SURF SCOTER, a
BLACK SCOTER, a LONG-TAILED DUCK, a RED-THROATED LOON, and a HORNED
GREBE. On June 18 a HORNED GREBE was just off the beach at the Swan
Creek mitigated wetlands in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD. A COMMON
LOON was seen June 20 in the Potomac River about 100 yards upstream
from Pennyfield, Montgomery Co, MD.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen June 16 between Fort Carroll and Fort
Armistead Park, Baltimore, MD.
LEAST BITTERNS were seen June 15 and 19 at the Dutch Gap Conservation
Area, Chesterfield Co, VA.
A female NORTHERN HARRIER was seen June 19 in Frederick Co, MD near
Adamstown.
Two BLACK-NECKED STILTS continue to be seen at the Swan Creek dredge
containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD with sightings on June 15
and 18.
There was a single WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER at Singerly pond where Rte
624 intersects Carter's Wharf Rd near Newland in Richmond Co, VA on
June 14. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was found June 15 at Huntley Meadows
Park, Fairfax Co, VA.
On June 16 two WILSON'S PHALAROPES were seen flying down the Potomac
River at Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD.
A probable ICELAND GULL was seen June 18 at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack
Co, VA. It was seen again and photographed on June 19 a half mile from
the traffic circle on the Tom's Cove side of Chincoteague.
A EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE* was seen June 15 at Adkins Arboretum,
Caroline Co, MD.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen again at Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD, this
time on June 15.
There was a lot of success on some of the nightjar survey routes this
past week with ten CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOWS and 8 WHIP-POOR-WILLS the
evening of June 14 on a route in Charles City Co, VA; on the morning
of the 15th 12 CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOWS and 20 WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard
on a route in King & Queen Co, VA.
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS were found June 18 at the bend of Dailey Rd at
the southern end of the Green Ridge State Forest, Allegany Co, MD. A
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen June 19 on an arranged trip to a
private farm in Craig Co, VA, off Rte 42, between Newport and New
Castle. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was also seen June 19 from the
pull-off on the left of Mountain Lake Rd (SR 700) about a mile below
Mountain Lake Hotel, Giles Co, VA.
Two VESPER SPARROWS were found in western Montgomery Co, MD, on June
18 and 19 along Westerly Ave, heading away from its junction with
Edwards Ferry Rd; a little further down the road there was a
DICKCISSEL. A VESPER SPARROW and three DICKCISSELS were found June 19
along Capstone Rd southwest of Frederick, MD.
A DARK-EYED JUNCO was found June 15 in Oakland Cemetery, Halifax Co,
VA.
DICKCISSELS continued to be seen and heard throughout the area this
past week. Some of the locations included Bower Rd east of Harney,
Carroll Co, MD; Sixes Bridge Rd, Carroll Co, MD; Knife Box Rd,
Caroline Co, MD; Bollinger School Rd south of Rte 140, Frederick Co,
MD; Sixes Bridge Rd east of Grimes Rd, Frederick Co, MD; Creamery Rd
north of Keysville Rd, Frederick Co, MD; Stauffer Rd south of
Walkersville, Frederick Co, MD; Beauvue Ponds, St. Mary's Co, MD;
Sassafras-Coldwell Rd east of Golts-Coldwell Rd, Kent Co, MD;
Stilltown Rd and Felton School Rd, Queen Anne's Co, MD; near Church
Hill, Queen Anne's Co, MD; Egypt Rd, Dorchester Co, MD; Turner Rd,
Calvert Co, MD; Long Neck Rd, St Mary's Co, MD; Lucketts, Loudoun Co,
VA; north of Winchester, Frederick Co, VA; in Chesapeake, VA at the
corner of Peach Rd and Hertz Rd; and along Smith Rd, Jefferson Co, WV.
