This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report covers the week starting June 17 and
was completed on Tuesday, June 24 at 9:00 a.m.
Birds of interest this week included various lingering waterfowl,
HORNED and RED-NECKED GREBE, GREAT SHEARWATER, ANHINGA, LEAST BITTERN,
hawks including MISSISSIPPI KITE, shorebirds, LEAST and BLACK TERN,
EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, SHORT-EARED OWL,
DICKCISSEL, and BOBOLINK.
Lingering waterfowl this past week included a SNOW GOOSE on June 18
and 19 on a pond at 12 Old Stones Rd, Harford Co, MD. A GADWALL was
seen at Masonville, Baltimore, MD on the 17th and a GREEN-WINGED TEAL
was seen on the 23rd from the Wildlife Dr at Blackwater NWR,
Dorchester Co, MD. A CANVASBACK continues to be seen at the Craney
Island Disposal Area, Portsmouth, VA with a sighting on June 20;
another was seen in Talbot Co, MD on the 21st. A RING-NECKED DUCK was
at the Swan Creek Wetland - Cox Creek, Anne Arundel Co, MD on June 18
and 19. Single GREATER SCAUP were seen on the 17th at the Perryville
Community Park, Cecil Co, MD and on the 18th at Fort Smallwood Park,
Anne Arundel Co, MD. Single RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were seen at
Masonville Cove, Baltimore, MD on June 17 and on the 18th at Tilghman
Back Creek Park, Talbot Co, MD.
A HORNED GREBE was at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA on June 20 and
another was seen on the 22nd at Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD. A
RED-NECKED GREBE was seen on the 17th and 20th at Violette's Lock, C&O
Canal, Montgomery Co, MD. A RED-NECKED GREBE, as well as a RING-NECKED
DUCK and a RUDDY DUCK, are all still lingering in the impoundments
along Pickering Beach Rd at the Little Creek Wildlife Area, Kent Co,
DE.
The evening of June 23 a GREAT SHEARWATER was seen and photographed
about 40 yards offshore in the surf at Dam Neck Navy Base, Virginia
Beach, VA.
A male and female ANHINGA are back on the pond at 590 Blackwater Rd,
Chesapeake VA with sightings on the 21st, 22nd, and the 23rd. As many
as five LEAST BITTERNS were seen June 22 at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co,
VA.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was reported on the 20th from Dumfries Rd, Fauquier
Co, VA. A NORTHERN HARRIER was seen on the 19th along Cheston Ln,
Queen Anne's Co, MD, just north of the Wye WREC.
Eight WILSON'S PLOVERS were seen again at Assawoman Island (restricted
access), Accomack Co, VA, on June 20. Two WILSON'S PHALAROPES were
seen June 18 at Broadkill Marsh, Sussex Co, DE; one was also seen the
same day in the marsh (Milford Neck Wildlife Area) at the end of Big
Stone Beach Rd, Milford, DE.
A LEAST TERN was seen June 21 flying over Kenilworth Park, NE DC.
Three LEAST TERNS were feeding at Southwest Area Park, Baltimore, MD.
A BLACK TERN was seen June 20 at Little Creek Wildlife Area, Kent Co,
DE.
The EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE along Reidtown Road in Hagerstown,
Washington Co, MD was seen again on June 21.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen and photographed June 19 along Rte 220 in
Highland Co, VA.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard singing June 22 along Mellwood Rd,
Prince George's Co, MD.
DICKCISSELS continued at the Patton Turf Farm, Montgomery Co, MD, with
sightings through June 22. Fifteen BOBOLINKS were seen on the 18th at
in Fair Hill NRMA, Cecil Co, MD. A BOBOLINK was seen June 21 at
Shirley Plantation, Charles City Co, VA.
