Top birds this week are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK in MD and
ANHINGA* in VA.
Other birds of interest include AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON, GLOSSY IBIS, MISSISSIPPI KITE, GOLDEN EAGLE, PURPLE
GALLINULE, COMMON MOORHEN, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, BLACK-NECKED STILT,
terns, SICSSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, warblers, SUMMER
TANAGER, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, DICKCISSEL, and RED CROSSBILL.
Four to five BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS were on the island in the
pond at Patterson Park, Baltimore, MD, seen throughout the week.
Occupants of a vehicle in slow traffic identified an ANHINGA flying
over I-295 near the intersection with US 301 near Richmond, Hanover
Co, VA on May 31. Another ANHINGA was at Harwood Mills Reservoir,
Newport News, VA on June 6
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was bathing in Shearness Pool, Bombay Hook
NWR, DE on June 4.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Lake Elkhorn, Columbia, Howard
Co, MD while another YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was at Schoolhouse
Pond, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's Co, MD, both sightings on June
2.
Two YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co,
MD on June 4. An adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON flew over the
Anacostia River at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Prince George's Co, MD
on June 7.
Four GLOSSY IBIS were found at the Swan Creek dredge containment
facility in northern Anne Arundel Co, MD on June 2.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE discovered at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, on the
evening of May 28 was seen again on May 31 and June 1 and 3. A
MISSISSIPPI KITE flew over a neighborhood near Silver Spring,
Montgomery Co, MD on June 1. A GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted in the Swoope
area, Augusta Co, VA on June 2.
A PURPLE GALLINULE was seen at North Beach, Calvert Co, MD on June 4
and 6. A COMMON MOORHEN was seen feeding at Huntley Meadows Park,
Fairfax Co, VA on June 1, 3 and 4. Another COMMON MOORHEN was seen at
Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach, VA on June 4.
A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was on a log at the head of the rapids at
Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD on June 3.
Two BLACK-NECKED STILTS were at Swan Creek dredge containment
facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD on June 5 and 6.
A GULL-BILLED TERN was at the Sandy Bottom Nature Park, Hampton, VA on
June 4. Two LEAST TERNS were at Schoolhouse Pond on June 7. 124 COMMON
TERNS were on Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on June 6.
A SICSSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen on Bethel Beach, Matthews Co, VA
on June 4.
A SWAINSON'S THRUSH was singing in White Oaks Park, Fairfax Co, VA on
June 1. Another SWAINSON'S THRUSH was on the John Demary Trail just
north of Purcellville, Loudoun Co, VA on June 5.
Reports of GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS came from the Monongahela State
Forest, Randolph Co, WV on June 5. Four BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS were in
the NW edge of Rockingham Co, VA on June 4. A white-lored subspecies
of YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was the highlight of a field trip to
Belmead, Powhatan Co, VA on June 4.
A SUMMER TANAGER visited a home in New Kent, VA on May 31. Another
SUMMER TANAGER was at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, DC on June 1.
Two GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were at Soldiers Delight, Baltimore Co, MD on
June 6 - an unusual occurrence for this site.
A DICKCISSEL was observed at Brookfield Rd. and Alden Rd in Prince
William Co, VA on May 31. Another DICKCISSEL was singing from a wire
at the intersection of Theodore Rd. and Principio Rd., Cecil Co, MD on
June 2. Another DICKCISSEL was at the intersection of Rte. 605 and
Rte. 608, New Hope, Augusta Co, VA on June 4. Two DICKCISSELS were on
Turner Road in southern Calvert Co, MD and a DICKCISSEL pair was in
Frederick Co, MD, both sightings on June 5.
Four RED CROSSBILLS were at Locust Springs Park, Highland Co, VA
tallied by a successful Big Day on June 3.
