This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report covers the week starting Tuesday, November 3, and was
completed on Tuesday, November 10, at 11:45 a.m.
Top bird this week was BROWN BOOBY* in MD.
Other birds of interest this week were waterfowl , RUFFED GROUSE, AMERICAN
BITTERN, hawks, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds,, BLACK-HEADED GULL, POMARINE
JAEGER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER,
WHITE-EYED VIREO, wrens, SNOW BUNTING, warblers sparrows and, RUSTY
BLACKBIRD.
TOP BIRDS
The adult BROWN BOOBY* is still hanging around Baltimore Harbor with
occasional sightings throughout the week and as recently as November 8.
OTHER BIRDS OF INTEREST
Five GREATER-WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were at Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on
November 8. A CACKLING GOOSE was at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE and another
one was at the Newark Reservoir, New Castle Co, DE, both on November 6. The
weekly trip to Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on November 8 noted seven duck
species including GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, BLUE-WINGED TEAL and NORTHERN
SHOVELER. Also on November 8, there were 12 duck species at Piscataway
Creek, Wharf Road, Prince George's Co, MD including: AMERICAN WIGEON,
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, CANVASBACK, REDHEAD,
RING-NECKED DUCK and RUDDY DUCK. Constitution Gardens, DC hosted seven duck
species including GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED
DUCK and NORTHERN SHOVELER on November 9. Two COMMON EIDERS were at the
Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE on November 9. A male HARLEQUIN DUCK was
resting on the south jetty at the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on
November 5. On November 9, there were two male HARLEQUIN DUCKS at the tip of
the Ocean City south jetty, Worcester Co, MD.
There were two HARLEQUIN DUCKS at the Indian River Inlet, Sussex Co, DE on
November 9.
A RUFFED GROUSE was at Finzel Swamp, Allegany Co, MD on November 8.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, NE DC on November
5.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew at the Kiptopeke Hawk watch, Northampton Co, VA on
November 9. A good spot this past week for GOLDEN EAGLES was the Town Hill
Overlook in Allegany Co, MD with 5 or 6 reported from there on November 3
and one more on November 8. A GOLDEN EAGLE was also spotted at Farley Vale,
King George Co, VA on November 9. A GOLDEN EAGLE was at the Ashland Hawk
watch, New Castle Co, DE on November 9.
The 4 SANDHILL CRANES at Farley Vale Farm and the HUDSONIAN GODWIT on
LaGrange Lane, both on private property (Please Do Not Trespass) in King
George Co, VA, continued to be seen during the week.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was at Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co, DE on November
8. A PIPING PLOVER was at the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on November
5.
The weekly shorebird survey at the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on
November 7 recorded 2,268 shorebirds including 121 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS,
145 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1,042 SANDERLINGS, 907 DUNLIN and some RED KNOTS. A
HUDSONIAN GODWIT was at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE on November 8. An
AMERICAN WOODCOCK was in a street near the intersection of Farrell Drive and
Spencer Road, Chevy Chase, Montgomery Co, MD on November 3.
The BLACK-HEADED GULL continued at Paper Mill Flats, Baltimore Co, MD, with
sightings as recently as November 6.
A POMARINE JAEGER was seen from the Cape Henlopen Hawk watch, Sussex Co, DE
on November 8.
A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE continued to be seen at Sky Meadows State Park, Fauquier
Co, VA with a report from November 3 and 8. Another LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was
along Shepherds Mill Road, Clarke Co, MD on November 7.
Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKER S were at the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Anne
Arundel Co, MD on November 5. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were at Myrtle Grove
WMA, Charles Co, MD on November 9.
An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was seen from the Kiptopeke Hawk watch,
Northampton Co, VA on November 8.
A late WHITE-EYED VIREO was reported from Point of Rocks Park, Chesterfield
Co, VA on November 8.
A SEDGE WREN was at Richardson Marsh on Rumbly Point Road, Somerset Co, MD
on November 5 and 7. Two MARSH WRENS accompanied the SEDGE WREN on November
7.
A SNOW BUNTING called as it flew over observers on Hart-Miller Island,
Baltimore Co, MD on November 4. A SNOW BUNTING was at Waterford Farm, Howard
Co, MD on November 7.
Late warblers included: a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at the C&O Canal, North
Branch, Allegany Co, MD on November 8; an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Fort
McHenry National Monument, Baltimore Co, MD and another at Sassafras River
NMRA, Kent Co, MD on November 8; a NASHVILLE WARBLER at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax
Co, VA on November 9; a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and a WILSON'S WARBLER on
the Gwynns Falls Trail. Baltimore Co, MD on November 4 and 5; a
BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER in Monticello Park, Alexandria, VA also on
November 4 and a BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER at Croydon Nature Center,
Rockville, Montgomery Co, MD on November 8;
A wide variety of sparrows was found throughout the reporting area. An
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was at Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co, DE on November 8. A
LARK SPARROW was at Golf Park, Sussex Co, DE on November 7. A trip to
Richardson Marsh, Rumbly Point Road, Somerset Co, MD on November 7 located a
SEASIDE SPARROW, three NELSON'S SPARROWS and six SALTMARSH SPARROWS. Three
FOX SPARROWS were at Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co, MD on November
3. Another FOX SPARROW was at Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on
November 4. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was at Masonville, Baltimore Co, MD on
November 3.
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at the Ken-Gar Palisades Park, Montgomery Co, MD
on November 7. Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were at Finzel Swamp, and three RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS were at the Cumberland Terminus, both in Allegany Co, MD on
November 8. A flock of approximately 20 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was at Sycamore
Landing, Montgomery Co, MD on November 8.
