about 10:15 AM.
Top bird this week is BAR-TAILED GODWIT in VA.
Other birds of interest are waders including WHITE-FACED IBIS, hawks,
SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds, GLAUCOUS GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE,
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, flycatchers including
OLIVE-SIDED, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH, warblers including CONNECTICUT, and LARK SPARROW.
The BAR-TAILED GODWIT continued at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA,
with sightings through Sept 9.
On Sept 6 the Delaware RBA reported a spectacular egret show during
the past week along Broadkill Beach Rd, Prime Hook NWR with a peak
count of 32 immature WHITE IBIS on Sept 3 and double-digits of WHITE
IBIS almost every evening between 6:30 to 7:30. There were also as
many as 44 TRICOLORED HERONS as well as LITTLE BLUE HERONS, and
approximately 1500 SNOWY EGRETS. A WHITE-FACED IBIS was found Sept 8
at the Shearness Pool, Bombay Hook NWR, DE.
A TRICOLORED HERON was seen and photographed on private property in
Loudoun Co, VA, on Sept 7.
Hawk migration began to pick up this past week at the hawk watches in
the area. On the 3rd a MISSISSIPPI KITE passed over the Rockfish Gap
HW, Waynesboro, Augusta Co, VA.
Three SANDHILL CRANES were found and well-photographed Sept 8 on
private property in the Leedstown area of Westmoreland Co, VA.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen Sept 4 along Harney Rd, Frederick
Co, MD. Two AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were at the Hughes Road Polo
Fields, Montgomery Co, MD on September 6 and 7 with three there on the
8th. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen Sept 9 along Savannah Branch
Rd, Remington, Fauquier Co, VA.
The Chincoteague NWR shorebird/gull survey on Sept 6 recorded 20
shorebird species. In addition to the continuing BAR-TAILED GODWIT the
highlights included two BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and over 200 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Two AMERICAN AVOCETS, a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER,
nine STILT SANDPIPERS, and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE were among the many
shorebirds at Chesapeake Farms, Kent Co, MD on Sept 3; the latter was
also there on Sept 7 and 8. A UPLAND SANDPIPER was found Sept 3 along
Harney Rd, Frederick Co, MD. BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were found at a few
locations this past week including the Old Railroad Turf Farm,
Wicomico Co, MD on the 8th; on the 9th at the Swan Creek Wetland/Cox
Creek DMCF, Anne Arundel Co, MD; and also on the 9th at Hart-Miller
Island, Baltimore Co, MD. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was found Sept 8 at the
Roanoke Sewage Ponds, Roanoke, VA. Two STILT SANDPIPERS were found
Sept 3 at the Blue Mash Nature Trail, Montgomery Co, MD. A STILT
SANDPIPER was seen at the Oaks Landfill pond through the fence at Blue
Mash on Sept 4. A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was seen Sept 4 at Lilypons,
Frederick Co, MD.
A 2nd summer GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from Ocean City flying north
along the beach at 28th Street.
Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen Sept 7 at the intersection of
Townsend and Seaside Rds on the lower Eastern Shore of Virginia in
Northampton Co, VA.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was found Sept 4 at Davidsonville Park, Anne
Arundel Co, MD. One was also seen Sept 6 at Swan Creek, Anne Arundel
Co, MD.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS continued to be seen throughout the region.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was found Sept 6 at Wheaton Regional Park,
Montgomery Co, MD. YELLOW-BELLIED and LEAST FLYCATCHERS were seen at
several locations this past week.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen Sept 4 and 6 at Milford Mill Park,
Baltimore Co. MD and another at Wheaton Regional Park Sept 6. Two
PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were found Sept 7 in the picnic area at
Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO also
showed up as a yard bird in Jessup. MD.
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were reported from two different locations in
Talbot Co, MD this past week. The first was at Black Walnut Point Sept
4 and the other was at a feeder near Oxford on Sept 6.
A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen Sept 6 near the first impoundment at
Pennyfield, C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD.
Warbler migration definitely picked up this past week. Some of the
sites reporting multiple species during the week were Rock Creek Park,
DC; Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD; Cromwell Valley Park,
Baltimore Co, MD; Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA; and the
Manassas Battlefield, Prince William Co, VA. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was
found Sept 8 near the lime kiln at Cromwell Valley Park, Baltimore Co,
MD. Another CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen at Cromwell on the 9th near
bluebird box #10 going towards #11 on the Minebank Run (blue) trail
between both bridges. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was also found on Sept 8
at Woodlawn Wildlife area, Cecil Co, MD. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was
seen Sept 9 on the Paint Branch Trail, College Park, PG Co, MD. It was
around the overgrown fence a few yards north of where the trail runs
underneath MD-193, next to the driving range. A MOURNING WARBLER was
found Sept 3 in a mixed flock on the Paint Branch Trail; another was
found Sept 4 in the maintenance yard ravine at Rock Creek Park and
still another at Wheaton Regional Park.
Two LARK SPARROWS were found Sept 3 in DC along the Oxon Cove hiker/
biker trail between the new Metro police evidence lab/storage facility
and DC Village. A LARK SPARROW also turned up during the Sept 6
Chincoteague NWR shorebird/gull survey.
