Zack, Gail and I enjoyed our annual trek to 'Warbler Road' last week
(Fri, 4/28/17 and Sat, 4/29/17). We had fair-to-nice weather both days,
going from 'bottom to top' of Warbler Road one day, and then hiking/birding
the Apple Orchard Falls trail the next day.
We tallied 65 species, including 13 warblers. Highlights included
nice looks at and listens to: Lousiana Waterthrush; Hooded Warbler;
Cerulean Warbler; Black-throated Blue and Green; Chestnut-sided Warbler.
We got all 5 vireos (White-eyed; Yellow-throated; Blue-headed; Warbling;
Red-eyed). We saw both orioles, and the Scarlet Tanager. We had a
interesting look at a Turkey Vulture eating a dead black snake smack in the
middle of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
A final treat was getting a great look at a White-crowned sparrow.
