I drove Rt. 3 on my way home to the river yesterday. With a bit more than an
hour of daylight to go I stopped at Washington's Birthplace. Northern
Parulas were brrrrrrrzuping. Backlit in a field were 7 displaying Wild
Turkey gobblers. The 3 hens appeared totally uninterested. The Potomac was
almost flat calm and at first I was excited by the birds on the water, until
I saw they were crab pot markers. Back in the woods there were 4 Summer
Tanagers. I saw Black and White Warblers, Blackpoll Warblers,
Yellow-throated Warblers and Yellow Warblers.
On the Rappahannock today a pair of Great Crested Flycatchers perched on the
same branch as I drank my early morning cup of tea. The Mockingbird has
their Wheep down cold. I have to be careful to see the Flycatchers because
my mocker has fooled me before. Brown-headed Nuthatches have finally
reappeared. I've missed their rubber-ducky calls. What a gorgeous day it was
today.
