Ten people joined me for the last regular Friends of Dyke Marsh sponsored
Sunday morning bird walks for 2015. Our next scheduled walk is January 10
after the Christmas Bird Count season ends. Our group started at High tide
today and the numbers of waterfowl were fairly sparse. At the conclusion of
the walk, numbers were gradually increasing and I was able to add Northern
Shoveler and Ruddy Duck to the species list. An adult Red-tailed Hawk
perched in the picnic area gave our group nice views. Some of the group
were treated to a Red-shouldered Hawk that was perched near the inlet across
from the marina. I was delighted to find a Fox Sparrow near Dead Beaver
Beach, but few others were able to see it.
Finally, the Bald Eagle breeding pair were busy repairing the Tulane Drive
nest. This nest was constructed last winter and fledged one youngster
during the 2015 breeding season.
