I checked a couple spots in Norfolk for ducks, etc. today around noon. The
cove of the Lafayette River visible from Surrey Crescent held the following
ducks: Mallard (35), Hooded Merganser (3), American Wigeon (3), Bufflehead
(25), and Lesser Scaup (2). (5 Lesser Scaup, 1 Common Loon, and an Osprey were
notable when I checked this site on 12/1).
Viewed the Elizabeth River from the W. end of 49th St. and found Bufflehead
(46), Horned Grebe (3), Red-breasted Merganser (24 in a tight raft), and a
single Common Loon and female-plumaged Surf Scoter diving together off the
rocks of the Lampert's Point Golf Course.
Then, around 3:30pm I was walking on the Old Dominion University Campus as
66 calling Tundra Swans flew over headed South in a rough V formation. Take
care,
Nick Flanders.
