Hi VA-Birders,
We drove up the Colonial Parkway between Yorktown and Williamsburg (to the Rt
199 exit) this morning to go shopping. Of course, we had our binoculars so we
could stop and check what birds might be in the York River along the way. The
water was as calm as we've ever seen it, and it was sunny so we had excellent
conditions for viewing waterfowl.
At the pullovers near Yorktown we saw Buffleheads and Horned Grebes. Across the
street from one of the overlooks, an adult Bald Eagle was easily seen perched
on a bare tree. At the Cheatham Annex overlook were several rafts of Ruddy
Ducks (200+), Canvasback (4), Ring-necked Ducks (3) and several Buffleheads.
At Felgates Creek, there were more Buffleheads and about a dozen swans. We
assume they were Tundra but without the scope we couldn't tell for sure.
Good birding, even for a short time!
