This weekend was our first Project Feeder Watch count and while we didn't
record anything extraordinary, it was nonetheless a good tally of our winter
birds.? Highlights were 4 Purple Finches, 10 Pine Siskins, and 49 American
Goldfinches.? White-throats were low (6) but juncos made a good showing with
17.? Other than feeder-visitors, we also had one Fox Sparrow, about 50 Cedar
Waxwings, and upwards of 70 robins.? The latter two species were in a feeding
frenzy thanks to our superabundant wild grape crop this year.? Enroute to my
deer stand I put up two Ruffed Grouse, also apparently dining on fallen
grapes.? Though we didn't get a Red-breasted Nuthatch this time, we did have
our FOS Winter Wren.? Overall 34 species -- not bad for mid-November.
