Nick Flanders and I wandered around Weyanoke this morning. We saw a few
warblers: 3 American Redstarts, a Common Yellowthroat, 2 Northern Parulas, and
2 warblers that were either Blackpolls or Bay-breasted (they moved about a lot
and it was difficult to get a good long look -- in typical warbler fashion).
We also saw a Summer Tanager and a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron by the creek. At
least 2 Swainson's Thrushes were near the shed. Gray Catbirds, Brown Thrashers,
and Red-eyed Vireos (and a few others) were feeding in a magnolia tree.
A gentleman by the name of Dick Ruffin (hopefully I got his name right) told us
about his father, who use to farm a few acres, into the late 1980s, next to
Weyanoke. The conversation was interesting -- I never realized that anyone was
still farming there so recently.
The weather was cloudy at first, but became sunny later in the morning.
