The Rockingham Bird Club made it's annual Whip-poor-will trip northwest of
Union Springs Dam west of Dayton last night. We heard three or four Whips
and had very good looks at two of them around the shale pit about three
miles back where we usually listen for them. Returning we found two more,
one at close range on the road bank.
We were unsuccessful in hearing a Chuck-wills-widow at Kevin Shank's place
on the way back. Kevin says the Chucks usually call more later in the
spring and up until the end of July. He says the early morning hours also
seem to be better.
