Last week Leigh Surkudowski and her husband found a pair of immature
White Ibis while canoeing the So. Rivanna Reservoir, near Charlottesville.
Yesterday, she was there with him plus Teresa Shaner and saw the
birds again. Today,
Dan Nissen and I canoed there. We put in at the boat ramp alongside
the Woodlands Road bridge, canoed under that bridge, past the rowing
club dock and on up the reservoir. After about fifteen minutes of
steady paddling, we found the two ibis feeding on a grassy flat on
the north side of the reservoir. From there, they flew upstream to
the south side, to a large grassy flat there. They were quite
approachable, and I was able to get these photos, not too sharp as I
was sitting in a rocking canoe when photographing. Dan pointed out a
Black Duck on that same grassy flat, which had a number of Mallard
and Wood Duck, as well as Killdeer and Spotted Sandpiper.
