Mary Foster, Bruce Richardson, and I had a nice morning of birding at
Lawson's Creek WMA in Halifax Co. Let's just say that sparrows are on the
move. It was almost impossible to look through bins and not see a Swamp or
Song or White-throated Sparrow. Along with those, we also had Towhee,
Field, Savannah, Chipping, and a single juvenile White-crowned Sparrow.
This is the first time I have seen a White-crowned in Halifax anywhere other
than Edmund's Park. We also thought we heard a Lincoln's sing a couple
times, but unfortunately could never locate the bird. Surprisingly, no
Juncos yet.
Other notables were a couple Rusty Blackbirds with a flock of Grackles, a
somewhat late Catbird, several Red-headed Woodpeckers, my FOS Winter Wren,
and a soaring Harrier.
Later this afternoon I spotted a Blue-headed Vireo in the yard with a flock
of Yellow-rumps and Pine Warblers.
