Six birders participated in the Northern Virginia Bird Club walk at Huntley
Meadows Park this morning. It seemed like the begining of winter. We had a
few Dark-eyed Juncos and lots of White-throated Sparrows, those harbingers
of colder weather. No warblers except Yellow-rumped, which may be here for
the winter. Best of all were 6 Bufflehead on the central wetland, my first
encounters of these winter charmers this season.
But the end of fall was still with us. We saw a very late Osprey flying over
and a Merlin. The adult Red-headed Woodpeckers that have been around this
summer are still present, but additional RHWO seen last winter have yet to
return. Two Eastern Phoebes have missed the memo about migrating south.
