Va-birders,
This morning I received message that a bird appearing to be a wood stork was
sighted recently on a private farm in western Albemarle County. I drove out
this afternoon and met Peter Traverse the farm manager there, who told me that
the bird was present briefly on Tuesday (June 21) and was last seen that same
day flying off to the NNE. He showed me video that he had taken (and intends to
post online shortly), which clearly shows a wood stork. As I said, the farm is
private, so I'm not broadcasting the location, but Peter said that should the
bird return he might consider means to allow birders to visit (e.g.
coordinating a group visit). In any case, the wood stork was not present this
afternoon Thursday, and may have continued on north, in which case folks to the
north of us should be on the alert.
