At York River State Park this afternoon I watched an immature Red-headed
Woodpecker near the Visitor Center for about 10 minutes. It
flew chattering from a snag into an oak tree. It picked an acorn from the
oak tree and flew with it back to the snag. There it pecked at the acorn
for a few minutes. I couldn't tell if it was trying to crack it open or
deposit it into a hole, *a la* an Acorn Woodpecker. Then suddenly it flew
up and fluttered like a Kingbird back and forth over the snag trying to
catch a flying insect. It failed; and then returned to its perch.
Is this typical Red-headed Woodpecker behavior?
