Adam D'Onofrio and I participated in the fall count at Kerr Lake today by
covering Dick Cross WMA in Mecklenburg Co. We had been watching the weather
forecast all week hoping for something other than clear and hot, but it was
not to be. Last year we lucked into tons of migrants due to a well timed
cold front. Our efforts were hampered further by the complete absence of
water in Clyde's Pond eliminating almost any chance of waterfowl and
shorebirds.
Despite the gloomy outlook we trudged on and were mildly rewarded for our
efforts with 65 species including 12 warblers (Parula, Yellow-throated,
Black and White, Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Chesnut-sided, Redstart,
Pine, WORM-EATING, Common Yellowthroat, Chat, and Ovenbird). Other nice
finds included Swainson's Thrush, House Wren, and Red-headed Woodpecker.
