I went birding at the White Oak Mtn. WMA in Pittsylvania Co. Sunday in the
middle of the afternoon heat. I didn't think I'd see much but a hot day
birding beats sitting in the house. But I was pleasantly surprised to find
a pair of Yellow-breasted Chats on the side of the road (near the Sight In
Range exit). I also heard Summer Tanagers singing in the woods. The
Red-eyed Vireos were plentiful and saw a White-eyed Vireo as well. The
corner yard next to the entrance was full of Brown-headed Cowbirds and the
Purple Martins were flying around the Martin house. A Red-tailed Hawk
circled the area, checking it all out.
Today, a Red-eyed Vireo was a first time yard bird for me. This seems to be
a very active spring/summer so far or maybe I'm just looking more.
