At 12 noon today, my husband and I saw two unfamiliar birds in the trees
right next to the building on the east side of the National Museum of
Natural History on the National Mall. We didn't have our binoculars, so we
used our camera to take some pictures. At home, we identified them as two
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS. I have posted the pictures: the first two
pictures are of one of the birds - I'm not sure whether it was an immature
or a female (probably a female?). I believe the third picture is of a
male. Even though it is shadowed, you can faintly see red on its throat.

As we left, the birds flew toward the butterfly garden which is in between
NMNH and the Sculpture Garden cafe.
