On Saturday, 13 members of the Hampton Roads Bird Club explored York River
State Park for the first of our monthly field trip for 2005-06.
We got off to a great start before getting into the park, spotting a HAIRY
WOODPECKER, adult male AMER. REDSTART and two YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS. A brief
stop at the pond before the entrance yielded a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, GREEN
HERON, E. WOOD PEEWEE and two BALD EAGLES.
There was a good bit of activity in the parking lot area during the first hour,
where we spotted CEDAR WAXWING, PALM WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, RED-EYED VIREO,
MERLIN, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and several E. BLUEBIRDS. Exploring the fingers
yielded SUMMER TANAGER, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, WHITE-EYED VIREO, E. PHOEBE,
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.
We recorded a total of 42 species for the day.
I encourage anyone interested in more information about joining the club or
participating in our field trips to contact me. We have a great time, and new
or experienced birders are always welcome.
