The birds and their behavior never cease to amaze me. We have the good
fortune (even if a bit untidy) to have a barn swallow nest under the entrance
to
our front door (about 15ft. high).
Last year the nest was constructed and a brood fledged, this year the nest
was reworked a bit and the current brood of 4 is ready to fledge.
Last Sunday, I noticed a baby bird on the stoop, not interested in flying
but trying to flutter when I got too close. As the week went along, this baby
flew across the street and I lost track on Thursday. This morning, as the
Mama and Daddy and some cousins are all flying in and around and swooping to
try to get these babies to GO (it's been 19 days) I see a small swallow fly to
the nest and get in between the 3 that are there, standing on the edge
watching. He disappeared for about 40 minutes and now, he with the other 3
are all
on the edge watching.
AMAZING. Did he fall from the nest too soon? Did you ever hear of one
coming back after 6 days out of the nest? These little birds are very social
and personable and I like them a lot. I clean up after them without
complaining-----they make me smile.
