A few birds managed to come out and say "howdy" to my friend and I on this
windy day. Our first stop this morning was Redwing Park (off General Booth
Blvd). The Robins had a stronghold in the grass of the field at the entrance
of Redwing and were hanging on for dear life. The winds subsided in the thick
trees in the trails at the back of Redwing Park. After being greeted by a
Pileated Woodpecker a few Prothonotary Warblers came out to let us know there
were other warblers besides Yellow Rumped present. The Great Crested
Flycatchers were noisy, a Red Eyed Vireo sang to us and then came out in the
sun and a Wood Thrush very quietly walked near by the path to give us a good
long close up look at him. We saw what may have been a Red Shouldered Hawk
fly from the water at the back of the trails. The Wood Duck hole was empty in
the tree at the end of the "red marked trail".
Next we went to Great Neck Park where it was not quite as windy. It was very
quiet at Great Neck but we did get good looks at a Ruby Crowned Kinglet.
Last stop was Dam Neck Navy Base down by the Navy Lodge. Several Catbirds
were present, a Field Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Brown Thrasher, Great Egrets
and a very cooperative Blue Gray Gnatcatcher. This little fellow must have
really been out to impress his lady friends. He was quite striking. I have
never seen the rich distinction of the gray and dark area above the eye as I
did today. If he hasn't attracted a lady to share a nest with yet he missed a
good chance today!
