At Sunrise Valley Park this morning (Reston, Fairfax County) I saw 7 Great
Egrets, along with 2 juvenile Green Herons and a Great Blue Heron. Also of
interest were a (probable) Willow Flycatcher, a female plumaged Orchard Oriole
(I haven't seen one there in the last few months) and some juvenile catbirds.
I later drove along Loudoun County Parkway looking for shorebirds, but the
fields were dry. The grass/turf has been cut very short, so it may be worth
going back after we get some rain. On my way home I stopped by the Ashburn Ice
Arena (Waxpool and Smith Switch Rd) to pick something up, and found a Northern
Bobwhite singing in the parking lot! There were also Grasshopper Sparrows close
by.
This is the second time I've heard a Bobwhite singing while facing a large
brick wall. Could they purposely do this in order to produce an echo to extend
the range their call can be heard?
