A visit to Dameron Marsh NAP in lower Northumberland County, Northern Neck,
this afternoon yielded very little in the way of bird life until we were
leaving. In the little puddle near the graveyard near the entrance to the
preserve, we found a GLOSSY IBIS that had not been there when we passed an
hour earlier. We had good light and could verify that it was a glossy and
not a white-faced ibis. The puddle also held eight lesser yellowlegs, two
greater yellowlegs, five green-winged teal and about twenty Canada geese.
The only birds seen from the observation platform were about forrty gannets,
a few red-breasted mergansers and buffleheads and some herring and
ring-billed gulls. We saw osprey, bald eagle, red-tailed hawk, sharp-shinned
hawk, and kestrel, in addition to a few miscellaneous passerines. Along
Guarding Point Lane and Cloverdale Road were a few killdeer, eastern
meadowlarks, and savannah sparrows.
