It didn't feel like spring this morning but the
80 or so tundra swans flying north overhead said
very loudly and beautifully that it truly is
spring. So did the hooded merganser female who
was escorted to her nest box by the drake. Other
highlights were 4 tundra swans in the marsh when
I arrived around sunrise, 80 rusty blackbirds, a
bald eagle, 2 snipe, 2 pipits, 2 blue-winged teal
drakes, and the usual assortment of approx. 20
pintails, 110 green-winged teals, 6 wood ducks, 8
shovelers, and 40 mallards. No turtles were out
by the time I left (around 8:30). A few frogs
were singing (leopard and spring peeper) and a
red fox was barely visible in the darkness near
the parking lot before sunrise.
