As the clouds broke up today (October 28), I went out for a balmy
lunchtime walk in the woods next to Cub Run stream north of Cub Run
Rec Center in western Fairfax County. Besides common seasonal birds,
I found a pair of Blue-Headed Vireos. Very close, long looks at both
sides of each bird, good lighting, unmistakable. The pair were
foraging about 20 feet apart, in the same general vicinity with 3
other birds (Kinglet, Warbler, Chickadee). They were about 20 feet
up, well below the tops of the trees.
Other birds included R-C Kinglets and an unidentified Buteo. I
thought I saw the underside markings of a Broad-Winged Hawk but it was
too short a glimpse to ID it.
