This morning, while conducting more ASNV point counts, I was surprised to find
a
beautiful male black-throated green warbler singing in one of the scraggly huge
oaks on the East Campus (Lower/Middle School) of Flint Hill School near the
very
busy route 123 in Oakton. When I first moved to Oakton these campus oaks had
summering wood pewee, yellow-throated and red-eyed vireo, and great crested
flycatcher. But now these birds are all gone. However, during migration the
warblers passing through really like these oaks.
By the way, yesterday I checked on the rose-breasted grosbeak heard in another
Oakton location last week (edge of Ashlawn Park), but the bird could not be
found in the 15 minutes that I listened. I will try again. Chances are that
the grosbeak and the bt green were just late migrants passing through.
All the best
