Hello Virginia birders,
Not surprisingly, conditions for shorebirds have not improved at Chincoteague.
Monday morning brought extensive heavy rains, on top of that dumped by Charley
on Saturday. Parts of the Woodland Trail were still under water Tuesday
morning. Our visit on Sunday through Tuesday yielded nothing impressive in the
way of shorebirds. Migration was in evidence, however. I witnessed a
gathering of around 300 Bank Swallows swirling and perching in two treetops on
the Wildlife Loop on Monday PM. Tuesday morning (sunshine finally!) as I
headed out early to the Woodland Trail, the first bird that greeted me was a
singing male Blue Grosbeak on the wire and later a female on the trail (which
may or may not be migrants, but were a joy nevertheless). I also saw around 6
female (or immature?) American Redstarts, along with 2 female Black-and-White
Warblers.
